The attitude of this bird reminds me of the old MAD magazine Spy versus Spy cartoons. I think it’s that long pointed beak that does it, along with the black plumage he wears like a cloak.
When this bird first returns, flashes his epaulets, and calls conk-la-ree, it’s a spirit-lifting moment in the birding year. The warblers are not far behind, and the dawn chorus is beginning in earnest. Here is a short video about the territorial display of the red-winged blackbird and what it can tell us about his breeding status and territory.
Just off the easel, Cloak-and-dagger blackbird is for sale now. Just click here to see this painting along with all my other originals currently for sale.
